Jack Bayliss focuses his legal practice in the areas of complex business and commercial litigation, employment litigation, insurance defense, and the full range of civil matters in an active trial and appellate practice. Jack is experienced in handling cases in the North Carolina Business Court and in Federal Court, as well as the State Trial and Appellate Courts. He has pursued and defended numerous cases to a successful verdict before juries in the State and Federal Courts, and preserved those verdicts on appeal. He also serves as a mediator and arbitrator and represents clients in licensing or administrative disputes with state boards and agencies.
Jack frequently counsels clients in business disputes, insurance coverage and claims disputes, trust and estate disputes, and construction disputes. He regularly prosecutes and defends commercial litigation, unfair and deceptive practice cases, professional and product liability cases, fire cause and origin cases, employment and workers’ compensation cases and cases involving serious personal injuries.
He has lectured in the areas of employment and workers’ compensation law, liability insurance coverage, premises liability and trial tactics. In his nearly three decades of experience, he has handled nearly every type of business dispute that may arise between companies, their owners, their clients, their customers and their competitors.
Representative Cases
- Represented a local business in pursuing an N.C. Business Court case resulting in a seven figure settlement with a merchant banking firm, involving oppressive conduct in breaches of a purchase agreement.
- Represented a contractor in a favorable settlement involving a fire that destroyed a million dollar building.
- Negotiated favorable casualty claim settlements with insurers over substantial fire losses.
- Represented a trust and trustee in compelling the dismissal of a lawsuit alleging breach of fiduciary duty on the part of a trustee.
- Secured a preliminary injunction resulting in a favorable settlement of an unfair competition case.
- Obtained a directed verdict in a jury trial, affirmed on appeal, in the defense of a case involving lifeguards at a community swimming pool.
